How Caller ID Spoofing Works
Calling Line ID spoofing, commonly called caller ID spoofing, happens when someone deliberately changes the name or number shown on your caller ID to disguise who is calling. A spoofed number may appear to belong to a local business, a trusted organization, or someone you know.
Scammers may use this tactic to gain your trust and ask for personal information, account details, or money. A familiar number on your screen does not, by itself, verify the caller’s identity.
If a call seems suspicious: Hang up and contact the organization using a number from its official website, your account statement, or another source you trust. Do not rely on a number the caller gives you.
Under U.S. law, transmitting misleading caller ID information is prohibited when done with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain something of value. The context and intent matter.
